The Elder Mentor Program

The Mages' Guild Elder Mentor program was designed to address the needs of midrange mages between GR 10 and GR 26 (and most probably beyond this).

Mages who participate in the program will at GR 10 seek out an Elder Mentor to be their guide and tutor, and discuss and report their progress with them. Involvement in the program is recommended but nae required. It does bring special rewards nae available to those who do nae participate, but keep in mind that the true purpose behind the Elder Mentor program is to help young mages develop their characters and learn about their capabilities.

Elder Mentors are Mages who have progressed in their paths and often subguilds. They are ready to pass advice and knowledge to those following a similar path.

An Elder Mentor will usually only accept apprentices of same class and similar path (i.e., same subguild). Exceptions to this are up to the Mentor and the prospective apprentice. The Guild will nae interfere when an Elder Mentor and an apprentice tie their bond.

While many Elder Mentors and their students carry on working together far beyond the point at which the student reaches guild portal 26, the apprenticeship may also be a stepping stone on the learning path… in other words, a student might work with his or her Elder Mentor until a specific goal is reached, and then move on. Either way, the program is designed to meet the needs of the learning, growing mage, and we encourage both the mid-term and the longer-term bonds.

Note fer Mages seeking to become apprentice:

Elder Mentors can often be recognized in GWHO by *EM* or EM in their title, jest as mentors fer those below LL 10 are recognized by *MM* or MM. Some Elder Mentors will also offer mentor services to the new mages, and some will nae. This is up to them. Also nae all Elder Mentors will have an EM in their title, so if ye be looking fer an Elder Mentor and ye see someone progressed on yer path, feel free to ask them if they might be taking apprentices.

Note fer the progressed mages seeking to accept apprentices:

Often, progressed mages who are recognized as exemplifying the qualities of Elder Mentors will be approached by the Head Mentor and the ArchGuides. If ye are willing and prepared to be an Elder Mentor, and nae have been approached yet, please contact the Head Mentor. It is then expected that ye stay in touch with both the Head mentor and yer ArchGuide. The entailed rewards will nae be granted by the guild unless ye give official notice of taking apprentices. Ye shall inform the Head Mentor and the ArchGuide about the progress of yer apprentices, i.e. the tests they pass, so we can hand out the rewards.

Test of Arcana

An Apprentice must complete the Test of Arcana by making all seven runes that can be made in the Guildrank 10 portal. They must of course figure out how to do this themselves. After they have performed the task, they can be made apprentice by the overseeing Elder Mentor. The reward is plentiful:

The student now will be named Novice Mage (name of apprentice), (name of Elder Mentor)'s Apprentice.

Novice Mage is the title rewarded fer mages who reach GR 10. The suffix will only be granted to those who passed the Test of Arcana.

The Apprentice will also receive a full set of suited armour. The reward will only be arranged through a guild officer.

Test of Character

At guild rank 15 the Elder Mentor will assign his or her apprentice a task of character. (See “Ideas for Test of Character” below.) Examples could be: Cure a bad disease, or summon a small demon. The Elder Mentor will assist the apprentice and the resulting event will be noticed and admired by all in the guild (i.e. posted on the mages’ public boards). (OOC note: This is a roleplay assignment.)

The student will now be named: (prefix of choice) (apprentice's name), (Elder mentor's name)'s Novice.

Again, the prefix is granted at Guildrank 15 to any mage (as the Guildmaster sees fit). The suffix will only be granted to those who passed this test.

The student will also receive two rune rings of choice. Again, the rune rings will be given out by a Guild Officer only.

Test of Battle

At guild rank 20 the apprentice will perform the task required to attain the Greater Magestaff. The Elder Mentor will assist, but nae give the "fish", but the "fishing rod" at most.

Upon completion, the apprentice now can choose a prefix and a suffix title of choice. If the apprentice wishes, a suffix (name of Elder Mentor)'s student can be granted now.

The reward is the Greater Magestaff itself as well as the title.

Fer pacifistic mages, the alternative

Test of Healing

will be assigned according to the situation. It could involve saving someone from death in a very difficult situation (like someone with 150 hps is poisoned fer 200).

Upon entering the subguild, the Elder Mentor will usually introduce the apprentice.

After the apprentice has entered the subguild, the apprenticeship may continue formally, or it may stop. That be between the student and the Elder Mentor. We have found, however, that apprentices and Elder Mentors usually forge strong bonds which far outlast the set-out parameters of the program. That is indeed the greatest reward of the program itself – a lasting relationship in which both parties learn and grow.
