The magestaff granted to all apprentice mages on entry to the guild is a powerful and useful tool. As the third disk of Andaria relates, it was one of the first such staffs to be made by the guild and it is therefore vital that you understand its powers fully.
In the form that you receive it, the magestaff will be one of flight. The first thing to do is to EXAMINE MAGESTAFF. This will give you basic information regarding the staff. To release the fly spell in the staff you can either ACTIVATE MAGESTAFF, or, if it is in your hands, WAVE MAGESTAFF.
Note also that the Magestaff is a one handed weapon. It is not the strongest of weapons for armed combat, but it is certainly better than a sharp dagger. You should consider using it until you have the powers of sorcery to call upon in battle.
Now, hold the staff in your right hand, free your left hand of all items, and then BREAK MAGESTAFF. Do not worry about trying this out on your magestaff - it was designed to work this way. You will then be left holding an empty mage staff and a rune of flight.
Now EXAMINE STAFFRUNE and it will show you that the rune has many powers. You can recreate the magestaff of flight by MIXing what is in your hands. Alternatively, you can ACTIVATE STAFFRUNE to be left with a rune of defence. This can be mixed with the empty mage staff to form a magestaff of defence.
The magestaff of defence contains the spell of Light Shards. This is one of the basic spells of naturalism and applying the spell to yourself or another will cause a hovering glowing magical shield to appear and increase your defence. For more information about your current defence consult your STATS. Also, to see the exact strength of your shield consult your HEALTH. The HEALTH information is also of use to a mage because it will list the spell that you currently have readied in your mind.
To continue with the examination of the Magestaff's properties, BREAK MAGESTAFF, and ACTIVATE STAFFRUNE to change the form of the rune and MIX to create a new staff. Using this process two more types of staff can be obtained and used in a similar manner. Finally, activating the fourth such rune will return you to the rune of flight.
While the Magestaff provides many useful powers, a Greater Magestaff, once lost to mortalkind, has been found and its immense powers harnessed. However, this awesome tool is only available to those magic users who have proven themselves a valuable asset to the Guild.
