What follows are the Guildmaster Punishment Options and Guidelines. This is a document given to the GMs to allow them a greater ranger of options for upholding their guild's charters and policies and to give them more power in protecting their guild members.
The Guilds Team has spent a long time on this document and we've tried to keep it as simple as possible to avoid complications, misunderstandings and room for loopholes. We are reluctant to add even more language, however, if there are some things that are unclear, please feel free to post here and let us know and we'll see if we can clarify the point more clearly without complicating it even more.
These options should be considered in effect as of this posting. The guild masters have all seen this document over the last couple of weeks and have had ample time to ask for clarification so they should have a good handle on what it all means.
Guilds
**********
What follows are the guidelines and options that a Guildmaster has available to her/him when the need arises. Please read them carefully. The reasons to impose punishment will be varied and will differ from guild to guild and from GM to GM. These could include everything from charter infractions to attempts on the life of a Guild Officer...and anything in between. They are set up so that the GM MUST consult a majority of her/his Guild Officers in most cases to insure an absolute minimum chance of "favoritism" or "targeting" to take place. In addition, in all cases, the GM and her/his GOs are required to send logs and reports to the Guilds Team to further insure that there are no unfair practices taking place.
Option One: The first option is for the GM to title the accused appropriatly. For instance, if the accused taught a skill that your charter forbids teaching, your GM may with to title him/her "Shamed" or something similar. It's fully at your GMs discretion. No trial is needed. Titles are totally at the discretion of the GM.
Option Two: The next, and MUCH more severe option would be to insist on the destruction of a valuable guild or sub-guild item. This step should ONLY come AFTER the guild's officers have discussed the matter and come to this as the appropriate solution. If the accused refuses, then it may be nesecarry to impose a more severe punishment. If this is the chosen punishment, a full report should be emailed to guilds@legendsofcosrin.com including a log of the Guild Officer's meeting to discuss the punishment.
*NOTE: The Guild Officer's meeting should consist of a majority of the guild officers. For instance, if there are six guild officers including the GM, there must be four guild officers present at the discussion and in agreement on the punishment. Failure to come to an agreement should result in a compromise that all guild officers present can agree upon.
Option Three: A bit more severe is a removal of guild levels. Your GM is allowed to request the removal of up to five guild levels. In order to impose this option, your GM must first hold a metting with your Guild Officers to discuss punishment options, then your GM MUST send a full report and a log of your Guild Officer's meeting to guilds@legendsofcosrin.com BEFORE she/he makes the punishment publicly known. This option MUST be approved by Guilds before your GM may impose the punishment. If it is approved, your GM may then make the punishment known to the accused (or to the guild in general...at the GMs discretion) and after that, Guilds will remove the guild levels.
Option Four: The most severe option, and the most complicated, should be saved for only the grossest of offenses against your guild (i.e. attempting to murder another guild member or guild officer, treason, etc).
a) First step will be for your GM to post a note on your PRIVATE guild boards tittled **GUILD TRIAL** announcing the intention to hold a guild trial. This post should include a full description of the crime. The post should also include a very specific timetable for the trial including dates, participants* and the sentance that this crime carries (i.e. an attempt on the life of a GM could carry a sentance of 20 guild levels and a six month (OOC months) ban from entering the guild...sentances can either be put up for vote at the time of trial announcement, or voted on by the GOs...that decision is fully at the discretion of the GM...once a sentance is decided on, that sentance will carry for all future crimes of the same nature). The sentance carried should be cleared with Guilds before you post. You will have a maximum of four OOC weeks from the time of your posting to the trial.
* Participants - There should be a jury of three guild members (not including GOs). An unbiased judge approved by the jury members and the defendant who is NOT a member of your guild. And finally the defendant. Cosrin staff members are disqualified from taking place in guild trials in any capacity with the exception of Guilds carrying out the nesecarry OOC duties.
b) Next comes the trial. This should be carried out in the most simplistic way.
- First, the complaintant (the person who the crime was commited against...if it's a crime against the guild, the GM should represent the complaintants as a whole or a person that the GM appoints to act as such) will present the accusations.
-Second, the complaintant will be allowed to present a maximum of three witnesses. Once the complaintant has opportunity to question a witness, the defendant (or his appointed spokesperson) will have an opportunity to do the same. Each questioning session will be time limited to 10 minutes (meaning, the complaintant may question for 10 minutes, then the defendant will have 10 minutes to question). After the questioning of each witness called by the complaintant, the defendant may call a maximum of three witnesses. The process will be the same as with the complaintants witnesses.
-Third, the judge and the jury will retire to a private room for discussion and decision. Unlike real life trials, the sentancing will be decided by a majority vote, not an unanimous vote. Discussions on verdict will be time limited to one hour. At the end of one hour, if there is not a majority vote one way or another, the trial will be dropped and no punishment will be handed down**.
**The sentance that is carried with a crime can not be changed. The only choice is THAT sentance.
c) Finally comes the sentancing. The sentance should be announced in GUILD shouts and then immediatly posted on the PRIVATE guild boards as part of the original string which was tittled **GUILD TRIAL**.
*NOTE: Concerning postponment or failure to show up for a trial...Postponments due to OOC issues will be allowed. Each side (complaintant and defendant) will be allowed two, 4 OOC day postponments. If, after the alotted two postponments, one or the other side doesn't show up, the verdict will fall on the side of the one who DID show up.
d) At the end of the trial and sentancing, the Guild Master MUST email a full and complete report of the proceedings to guilds@legendsofcosrin.com
e) While awaiting trial, the Guild Officers have the option of disallowing the defendant's entering the guild. This will be done by placing the defendant into "Suspension". In essance, the defendant's guild membership will be revoked untill the end of trial and sentancing. The defendant will be allowed to enter the lands, but not her/his guild.
These guidelines are ment to give the Guilds and the Guild Masters a greater range of options and freedom in relation to upholding their charter and preserving the freedoms and rights of their guild members as well as protecting their guild members. They are ment to be as IC as possible while still allowing for OOC interferences that crop up.
