So you would be a great sorcerer? Well then, these are the things you must understand well: Spiritual Karma, Sorcery Spell Use, offensive spells, holding spells, basic sorcerer strategies, and complementary skills and spells. You should be sure to inspect these writings completely before you decide upon a path to follow. After all, understanding begets power... and that is what being a sorcerer is all about.
First, though, a word about you. Who are you? Of what race of Kali's creation do you belong? Mysticism is the single most important quality in your soul leading unto magical power, but many are those other qualities that become useful... so choose carefully before your incarnation. Aye, the gods have allowed us to have a say in our incarnation. Good thing, too. You should be what suits you best, here. I have seen the most powerful sorcerers from the ranks of elves, humans, half-elves, sprites, and even gnomes. Not to say other races cannot be competent sorcerers; so be what is in your nature. You will find that is the best way to live anyway. Welcome to Legends Of Cosrin!
What, you would know more? Then know that Spiritual Karma be the most important thing any magic user must know about. This is especially true for the sorcerer. You won't be much of a magical user without it. Why?
Herein lies the mystery. Understand that Spiritual karma be the sensitivity to the magical forces that flow all around us. The greater your Spiritual Karma, the more your capacity to use magic will grow as you increase in experience and status. The faster you will be able to replenish the magical energies you have expended, both whilst you travel, and whilst you rest. Before all else, therefore, prepare your mind and soul by always learning as well as you are able to, the mysteries of Spiritual Karma. Later in your career, you will be glad you did it as early as you could.
Spells! What good are they, if you learn not well the particular discipline? For you, as a sorcerer, this means Sorcery Spell Use. This skill allows you to cast sorcery spells, and has a direct effect on how powerful the spell you cast will be. It also helps reduce the time between casts, along with improving the chance of a correct casting. While Spiritual Karma helps increase the total magical energy at your disposal over time, the Sorcery Spell Use skill increases the power of the sorcery magic you cast. The wise sorcerer will not delay long in learning this skill as ably as possible. You want not only to become powerful, but also to be as powerful as you can be.
Spells, spells, and more spells! You must first specialise somewhat; later you can expand your repertoire of sorcery spells. Choose initially from the spells of fire, ice, or electricity. Choose one of fireflames, chill or zap - and scribe it well. Keep in mind that certain beasts resist certain spells. Beasts of fire resist fire spells fairly well, as beasts found in cold climates resist spells of the nature of ice. Interestingly, beasts tend to be more vulnerable to the opposite spell as to their nature - So those same beasts living in cold climates are especially vulnerable to spells of fire. Consider, then, learning a second kind of offensive spell a little later in your career, so as to be more flexible.
Before you learn a second offensive spell, though, scribe a holding spell, such as ensnare or web. Immobilising your enemies means they cannot strike you back during combat. Need I elaborate on the usefulness of this? I think not. Learning more than one hold spell later in life will also prove useful.
Many are the spells you may choose from. I shall not list them all here, but related spells can be referred to as spell-circles. More advanced spells have a pre-requisite spell or spells that must be learned first, to a novice understanding, before the more advanced spell can be learned within the spell circle. Therefore, if one spell shall only be a stepping stone to a more desirable spell, remember you do not have to learn it any more than to a novice understanding if you choose. However, the more you scribe a spell, the faster you shall be able to cast the spell, which will be useful against fast monsters. To an extent, the more effective it will be as well. So study your spells well!
And whilst you decide which spells you shall learn, choose those most immediately beneficial, but plan for the future, too... 'Tis not a bad idea to hold in reserve a little of the means required to learn new skills and spells. There be spells rumoured to be taught in the highest guild areas that be quite powerful, including room spells, which affect every creature in the same room as you. I also recommend that at some time you learn the sloth spell, which is the pre-requisite to the haste spell. Slowed and held creatures succumb swiftly to the hastened sorcerer with powerful offensive spells.
Once you have pursued sorcery spells, and become knowledgeable therein, you may want to consider dabbling just a bit in the magic spell usage, or the healing arts to aid you in your travels. A little unlock, invisibility, protective or healing abilities will prove rather useful. Remember, though, you are first a sorcerer, especially when beginning life in Legends Of Cosrin. Many are the paths you can later choose to augment your powers of sorcery.
Aha! I scry you be yet still intent upon greatness. Good! We are far from finished. There be certain other skills, such as riding, physical training, resilience, spell resistance, awareness, arcana, and a few others you should know about. Learn to ride various mounts. Become capable of mastering the dragon after you have become somewhat capable with your spells. Dragons will aid you in battle, vastly improving your defence. So visit the guild stables, and see how much gold you will have to earn.
Why be weaker than you must? Learn a little physical training. Spells to protect, and enchants to strengthen armour will be most useful to you, as well as healing potions, and herbs; but a little exercise won't hurt you. Many a sorcerer ignores this skill, with no real harm because of the magic they can wield. But this skill helps your health grow as you increase in stature and experience; much like Spiritual Karma helps magic.
Learn spell resistance, and resilience. Resisting the magic of others depends largely upon these two skills, though it will be a long time before these skills will really make themselves felt. Keep them in the back of your mind, though. When you have a few extra moments enabling you to train, consider these, if you are happy with your other spells and skills.
Be aware. Awareness is essential for everyone, including the sorcerer. You will find more hidden things if you are aware.
Now, other skills helping your defence can be learned much later. Someday, you may even consider learning a bit of a weapon skill to augment your magic, as some beasts resist magic completely. But only if you have the extra means to do so without hurting your magical abilities. Another skill I did not mention is the art of arcana. Creating interesting rings, and other charms will be useful as well. Early in your career, though, you are better off buying what you need from those more experienced wizards, shamans, and sorcerers who have dabbled in these talents already.
After you have joined the mage's guild, Guild portals need to be accessed as soon as you become eligible for each one, in order to obtain the most benefit to your growth and progress as a sorcerer. DO NOT guildtithe as much as you can all of the time. To become a powerful sorcerer, you shall want to access portals as soon as you can, but there be a right and a wrong way to do this.
Guild status may never surpass your overall status in the lands. Guild portals are numbered currently by tens. So ideally, you want to enter the guild portals no higher than the appropriate status in the lands, in order to learn newer and valuable skills as soon as you can.
Therefore, I recommend you guildtithe 10 percent or less until you are about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way to the land status enabling the next guild portal. Then, guildtithe 75 percent, until you achieve the guild portal. This will allow you to first become powerful enough to survive, and then allow you to quickly rise in guild status when you are ready to seek entering that next guild portal. And you DO want to enter that next guild area as soon as you can, if you truly seek to become a powerful sorcerer.
Consider these words as you progress and I think you will do just fine. Let me add but a couple hints to you, before you seek fame, fortune, and notoriety within Legends Of Cosrin. First, there is safety in numbers. So adventure as much as you can in a party. It will be more enjoyable, and the beasts you face will succumb much quicker, keeping you safer. Use good tactics when you fight; kill the pesky, smaller beasts first, especially those that can stun or immobilise you. Don't let the stun jelly get you first when fighting in a party against a horde of ogres! Then, after that, finish the larger, tougher beasts last.
Talk with those you shall meet; many will have good advice for you, in addition to my words, no matter how experienced you think you be. Be well; and may your spells never fizzle.
