As always within the ranks of rogues
and thieves tales surface of rare items, precious metals and extinct
gems. One of these extinct gems was named moon pearls, and this is the
tale that surrounds them.
Before the arrival of mortals, while Kali was still yet constructing
the lands and everything within it, she would wander her unfinished
creation keeping a critical eye on all that occurred. As company, Kali
had created a creature called a cat. A four legged mammal that bore the
softest fur all over its body. It possessed the fundamentals of all
things Kali felt was needed to truly appreciate her work and tireless
endeavours; sight, taste, touch, smell and hearing.
Whenever she was in need of inspiration or insight, she would pause in
the place she felt lacked a thing or two and reflect. At such times she
would let her cat wander. Through the foilage and about the area the
cat would play and Kali would create for it insects and other animals
to preoccupy itself.
They would sit for many days at a time and enjoy the beauty and life
Kali had blessed the area with, and despite the ample amount of things
to preoccupy itself with, the cat of course had a favourite toy Kali
had to offer. In the wake of the early morn with the moon still high in
the sky, the dew would slowly form on the grass about Kali’s
cats paws. Intrigued the cat would spend tireless hours batting dew
drop after dew drop from the blades of grass.
Amused by the fact that her cat seemed more interested in her morning
cycle then most creatures she could create on whim for them, she
blessed her cat with a gift that would ensure they could continue
playing with the dew drops long into the day. Just before the moon
would disappear she permitted her cat the power to turn any dew drops
they touched into pearls. One by one they would solidify and fall to
the ground where the cat could happily continue to bat them around,
chase and hunt.
Collecting a few she could find before they moved on Kali would place
them in her hand, blowing gently on one after another. Weightlessly
they would ascend to the skies. Slowly but surely they took their place
high above to catch the light from the hidden sun throughout the dark
night as stars. A simple honour every night for all to appreciate
thanks to her precious companion; and a constant reminder that
sometimes the simpler things in life can give greater pleasure then the
grand.
And those who speculate are sure there are some pearls about, probably
well covered over the many many years so as not to be in sight. So it
comes to pass on occasion you’ll see a curious rogue or thief
digging about in those areas that are covered with the finest fields of
grass in the hopes of one day discovering a moon pearl that either Kali
or her cat forgot.
