Stories And Tales

Shinari was born into the family Esca; her mother Isia and father Gwaihir have lived in the depths of the Ashwood forest all their life, as did their parents before them. Esca is not a well-known family in these times, but among the purest Elven blood there is to be found in these lands. Shinari is an only child and grew up in a loving family. She soon began to realize that her life had no direction, no purpose -- until at the age of 7 she found herself lost in the forests. She was so very scared. She wondered aimlessly around until she came across a strange sight: a sprite was sitting on a branch. She had not seen anything like it before, as she had not explored the forest. She was hesitant to approach the sprite but she looked inside herself and found the courage to approach..

"Hello."

There was no answer from the sprite.

"Can you help me?"

"Help is given only to those who need it," replied the sprite.

"I'm lost I cant find my way home."

"Home is where the heart is, you are always there."

"O..K... but there are scary things in here and I need to find my parents, Please, cant you help?"

"Your parents are not what you seek."

"What's that meant to mean? Please stop speaking in riddles, can you help me or not?"

"So impatient the young of today."

The sprite opened his wings and leapt into the air, dropping a piece of parchment.

"Wait can't you--"

The sprite was gone.

Shinari was again alone in the woods. She picked up the parchment dropped by the sprite. It was a map of Ashwood. On it were marked two points. One was labelled "Start of the Journey," the other "The End." She followed the path laid out on the map. She presumed that she was at the point marked Start of the Journey. As she followed the paths through the forest she found herself outside in the open. She could see many people travelling a long road. Her map showed that she should proceed south down the road. She was a clever child and so to avoid walking all the way she jumped onto the back of a passing merchant's wagon. She soon found herself asleep.

She was awoken by loud voices. The merchant was having a somewhat heated discussion with a gate guard. She found herself at a huge gateway leading into a wondrous city. She sneaked down from the wagon and slid past the guard. She was breathtaken by the commotion. She looked down at her map and saw it had changed. It was now a map of a city with the word Moorgate at the top. The pointed marker "The End" marked a building on the map. It looked like some kind of tower. She looked up and could see it from were she was towering over all other buildings. She made her way through the crowed of people and just followed the streets in the direction of the tower for it could be seen from everywhere in the city. She arrived at what she though was a door but it was unlike any she had seen before. A massive sign read MAGES GUILD. Just looking at the sign made her feel comfortable in an unknown place. She had until now forgotten about her parents in Ashwood. She knew not how far away she was or how to get back to them. Suddenly the feeling of comfort faded and she broke down and started to cry.

There was a sudden noise like a crackle and someone appeared from the Mages Guild entrance. It was the sprite she had talked to in Ashwood. The sprite flew over and landed on a stone next to Shinari.

"Don't be sad, my child. You will see your parents again. But it is time for you to start on your journey.

Shinari wiped away the tears and looked to the sprite,

"You never told me your name"

"My name does not matter for now. What does matter is what you do now.

The sprite looked to the Guild and Shinari know then and there that she was going to join the Mages Guild.

"But I don't have magic powers."

"We all have the potential in us for magic. The Elven race is especially strong with magic. It will be a long, hard process but I know you can do it. Now I must go"

The sprite flew off.

"Wait, but how do I join?"

He had already gone. The map had again changed. A new point was marked: "Inspiration." Shinari could not find her way to the point, and so asked for direction. She discovered that the point marked was that of the Library. She tried to gain access to the library but was not allowed in. She know she had to gain access somehow. She went around the building and found a small hatch. She opened it and climbed inside. She looked around, there were rows and rows of scrolls on shelves. There was a spark of energy and a scroll fell of the shelf. The scroll title said Mages guild. There was something else written in a different colour and looked like it had recently been added. It said, "I knew you would find a way." Shinari studied the scroll and then a lot of other scrolls. She found that she had spent three days in the library without even realizing it. She had learned all about the guild and how to join. It took some time but she joined the guild and began to study hard. Time flew by -- days, weeks, months, and before long years had gone by. She studied so hard she soon grasped the basics of magic and some of the advanced spells. Her life now had a direction a purpose. She had over the years kept in regular contact with her family in Ashwood via messenger pigeon. She still felt that there was something missing. Some part of her that was unfulfilled. After studying she left her chambers and ran into a young mage, just joined. She derived great satisfaction from helping him, from that day on she know what was missing. She would become a Guild Tutor.
